The Sydney Business Chamber says businesses large and small need to include strategies around making Sydney's night time economy safer and more inclusive for women if they want to maximise the benefits of a 24 hour city economy.
"The night should be a time for everyone to enjoy and as we develop a 24 hour economy in Sydney, it's important to consider how venues and outlets, public spaces and transport can be made safer so women and girls can enjoy the night," said Katherine O'Regan, Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber.
"Today's launch of the Greater Sydney Commission 'Women's Safety Charter' is an opportunity for all businesses, not just those involved in the night time economy, to sign on and make a commitment to do their part in making the city safer for women of all ages, both at and outside of work."
"It's been clearly shown in international cities with a 24 hour economy, that making them more female-friendly is not just good for society but also for business."
"A café in Concord providing well lit outdoor dining near the station would make it safer for women using the train, while a big city firm tracking and evaluating data to understand employee travel patterns could ensure they meet the different needs of men and women."
"It's also about gender balance and equality in the workplace - whether in a small business or multinational - from decision making to design and participation."
"The Sydney Business Chamber encourages businesses to sign up to the Charter and become leaders in making Sydney safer for women and all citizens."
