ABC appoints Lee Glendinning to lead delivery of regional and local content

The ABC has appointed former Executive Editor at The Guardian, Lee Glendinning, as the Head of Content Curation & Platforms in its Regional & Local division, to manage the delivery of content to metropolitan, regional and rural audiences.

In her new role, Lee will be responsible for ABC Regional & Local’s digital and social media output as well as managing content planning and operations, audio strategy and overseeing content quality.

Judith Whelan, Director Regional & Local, said Lee’s extensive editorial leadership skills will help strengthen ABC’s presence in regional and rural Australia as well as in our big cities.

“Lee has experience in bringing the very best out of the editorial and content teams she has led – here in Australia and in the USA and Britain. She will play an important part in helping us connect more deeply with Australian communities, particularly in our cities’ suburbs and in regional centres, which is central to us delivering on our 5-Year Plan.”

Lee said: “I’m so thrilled to be joining the ABC which has such an important role in keeping Australians connected to one another across the country – something which is more critical than ever right now.

“I’m passionate about how we tell the real stories of Australia. This is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the team working to make sure we can reach readers, listeners and viewers in a way which matters to them, in the communities where they live, and the issues they care deeply about.”

Lee’s journalistic career spans 20 years across three continents. She has worked across national and international news, managed newsrooms and devised digital strategy for the Guardian in the UK, the US and Australia.

She is currently an executive editor of The Guardian in London where she is responsible for deepening relationships with audiences through membership and reader revenue.

Prior to this, Lee was editor of Guardian US, directing editorial content from teams in New York, Washington and San Francisco, during which time staff won numerous awards for journalistic merit in special projects, news and innovation.

Lee began her career as a reporter with The Sydney Morning Herald before moving to the UK where she worked at The Guardian, The Times and The Evening Standard. After her return to Sydney, Lee worked as Asia-Pacific editor at The Guardian.

In 2013, Lee was appointed deputy editor of Guardian Australia, where she led the news operation and was a member of the founding team who launched the site.

Lee will take up her new position, based in Sydney, later in the year.

Regional & Local is responsible for the corporation’s metropolitan radio stations and regional radio and news bureaux, local screen content including Back Roads, Gardening Australia, Landline and Offsiders, live events that bring the nation together such as New Year’s Eve, Australia Day and Anzac Day and sport coverage across all our platforms. Its team works out of 56 metropolitan and regional locations around Australia.
