Abd-Al-Rahman Case: Trial Chamber I To Deliver Sentence On 9 December 2025

Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court (ICC) will deliver the sentencing judgment in the case of The Prosecutor v. Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman ("Ali Kushayb") in a public hearing on 9 December 2025, at 09:30 (The Hague time) in Courtroom I.

The session will be transmitted live through the ICC website. Practical information on attending the session and information materials will be available in due course.

The judges may impose a prison sentence, a fine may be added or forfeiture of the proceeds, property, and assets derived directly or indirectly from the crimes committed. The maximum sentence is 30 years. However, in extreme cases, the Court may impose a term of life imprisonment.

In order to determine Mr Abd-Al-Rahman's sentence in this case, the Chamber received submissions from the parties and participants regarding the possible sentence, and held a separate hearing from 17 to 19 November 2025 to receive evidence and to discuss matters related to sentencing.

Background:
Trial Chamber I is composed of Judge Joanna Korner (Presiding), Judge Reine Alapini-Gansou, and Judge Althea Violet Alexis-Windsor. The trial in the case opened before Trial Chamber I on 5 April 2022 and the closing statements took place on 11-13 December 2024. On 6 October 2025, Trial Chamber I found Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman guilty of 27 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes, in Darfur, Sudan, between August 2003 and April 2004. On 6 November 2025, the Defence filed its notice of appeal against the conviction. Furthermore, a phase dedicated to the reparations to victims will be opened.
