ABS confirms record number of jobs in Tasmania

Jeremy Rockliff,Acting Premier

Today's ABS Labour force data for June has confirmed our economy is charging ahead with the highest number of Tasmanians ever employed.

Employment in June hit a record-high of 262,200, and with 2600 jobs (1 per cent) added in the month, Tasmania had the highest employment growth in the nation, in seasonally adjusted terms.

The unemployment rate also dropped to 4.5 per cent – to be the second lowest in the nation, and amazingly, the lowest it's been in more than 10 years.

This is fantastic news and demonstrates our clear plan is working as we continue to support jobs and our economy through the COVID-19 pandemic and secure Tasmania's future.

Pleasingly, this growth was underpinned by increases in male, female and full-time jobs, demonstrating our recovery is broad-based across all cohorts.

There are now thousands more jobs than before the pandemic, and we can look to the future with optimism as we roll out the clear plan we took to the election to grow our economy and create more jobs.

But with COVID-19 still an ever-present threat, we know we have to continue generating more opportunities for Tasmanians as we work to secure Tasmania's future.
