Accessing help during restrictions

Residents facing challenges as a result of COVID-19 can get help accessing support services with the assistance of Council's Short Term Support service.

When experiencing difficulties caused by ageing, illness, isolation, family relationships and other complex issues, many people are overwhelmed by the idea of finding support and identifying the right agency or service to get help.

Short Term Support bridges the gaps between crisis support and early intervention, and providers who can help people with their long-term needs.

Last year the service saw an enormous increase in demand as a result of COVID-19, with many more people facing financial and housing distress, social isolation and loneliness, and family violence. In 2020 the service received more than 500 COVID-related referrals in addition to the almost 200 other clients served for other matters.

The team works closely with council services and external service providers to ensure the right connections can be made to help people in need.

Referrals come from a range of channels including direct requests to Council from individuals or their families, as well as from emergency relief agencies, hospitals and health care providers, housing organisations and occasionally law enforcement.

If you need assistance

The Short Term Support team can provide:

  • Help accessing food, medications or essential items for those isolating
  • Help accessing emotional and/or mental health support
  • Access to free reusable face masks for eligible residents
  • A friendly phone call for those experiencing loneliness or isolation
