Accolades for Logan safety champions

Wendy and Geoff Smith from Crestmead received the inaugural Stan Wells Award.

The 2019 City of Logan Safe City Awards have highlighted the important work done by individuals and groups to assist the local community.

The awards were at the Logan Metro Sports and Events Centre in Crestmead.

They acknowledge the work of volunteers, individuals, not-for-profit groups, government agencies and businesses.

It recognises their contribution to making the City of Logan more welcoming, inclusive and safe.

Geoff and Wendy Smith received the Stan Wells Award.

This was for their outstanding contribution to the Crestmead Neighbourhood Watch and the wider community.

This inaugural award is in memory of Neighbourhood Watch representative Stan Wells.

It recognises the contribution and service of an individual, community group or organisation to community safety.

This year's other winners are:

Volunteer category

Winner:

Rolando Pisia

Rolando played a large role in the Sturdee Park Youth Engagement Project.

He connected with the local youth and provided positive ways for them to engage in their local space.

Runner-up:

Crestmead Volunteers in Policing

The volunteers contribute hundreds of hours each year to crime prevention activities in the community such as security audits.

They also assist the Crestmead Neighbourhood Watch at community events and attend their meetings.

Not-for-profit category

Winner:

Youth Off The Streets

Youth Off The Streets supports disadvantaged and disconnected youth.

Their outreach service engages with young people where they gather and teaches them valuable life skills.

Runner-up:

The Family Place

The Family Place is a friendly community space offering free family activities.

It also runs parenting programs and hosts community events for Logan families.

They give support and information and link families to financial and social resources.

Government/Business category

Winner:

Sergeant Cherie McLean

Sgt McLean developed the High Risk Offender Diversion Program to guide offenders into other programs.

This allows them to learn skills to assist them to integrate with the community.

Participants have obtained drivers' licenses, re-engaged with education and obtained employment.

Runner-up: Senior Constable Mike McDonald

Snr Const McDonald is the Community Beat Officer at Rochedale South.

He works with key partners to deliver innovative programs to contribute to the safety of the community.

These initiatives have helped reduce reported crime in Rochedale South.

Runner-up:

Senior Constable Jen Wallis

Snr Const Wallis was responsible for a free safe vehicle number plate pack program for Logan residents.

The one-way screw for vehicle registration plates can only be removed with a special tool.

Since the program began there has been a decrease in the number of vehicle number plates reported stolen.

Partnership Category

Winner:

Logan/Beenleigh High Risk Team

The multi-agency team works together to support women and children at risk of domestic and family violence.

They manage the high risk posed by perpetrators, share information and undertake risk assessments.

Runner-up:

Crestmead Community Garden Project

This project involved the creation of a mural by volunteers with help from government and non-government agencies.

At-risk youth led the project with their ideas, input and direction and received mentoring and support.
