Acts that incite discrimination towards marginalised communities because of who they are, where they come from, or what they believe are abhorrent and have no place in our society.
There is no place in our parliament for divisive tactics, inflammatory rhetoric or actions that demean and vilify marginalised communities, based on their faith, race, culture or identity, such as the conduct seen in the Federal Parliament yesterday.
ACOSS strongly condemns these actions, which cause real harm to people who are already subjected to discrimination.
Politicians have a responsibility to lead by example. Language and actions that amplify harmful stereotypes about communities fuel attitudes of fear, distrust and hatred towards those communities, putting community safety and wellbeing at risk.
We call on all political leaders to condemn these acts without equivocation, and choose words and actions to actively combat discrimination and marginalisation in society, grounded in respect and a commitment to the rights and safety of all people.
ACOSS stands in solidarity with all communities and people who are harmed by discrimination and marginalisation. We will continue to speak out against attempts to scapegoat or vilify any marginalised community based on faith, race, culture or identity.
We urge the Federal Government to fully implement the National Anti-Racism Framework as recommended by the Australian Human Rights Commission without delay.
