ACT Policing has received a boost to its ranks after 29 new police officers were welcomed at a graduation ceremony held today at the National Gallery of Australia.
The recruit class of 24 men and five women, aged 20 to 45, bring with them valued experience from their varied backgrounds.
Before commencing their training at the AFP College in Barton, the new officers worked in industries including real estate, security, defence, teaching, childcare, the NDIS and the AFP.
The ceremony was attended by Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Dr Marisa Paterson, Chief Police Officer Scott Lee as well as police leadership and instructing staff, family and friends of the new officers.
Minister Paterson said the new recruits formed part of the Government's $107 million investment over five years provided in the 2023-24 Budget to recruit 126 additional police officers, which will ensure ACT Policing can keep pace with Canberra's growing population.
Minister Paterson thanked the new officers for choosing to join ACT Policing.
"Policing is a challenging yet rewarding profession and I commend our new officers for their desire to make a meaningful impact," Dr Paterson said.
"The new recruits will become an integral part of the ACT community and help keep Canberrans safe."
"On behalf of the ACT Government and the Canberra community, I would like to extend the warmest of welcomes to all of our newest ACT Policing officers. We wish them all the best with their future policing career."
Chief Police Officer Deputy Commissioner Scott Lee welcomed the new police officers and looks forward to seeing the new recruits start their work at police stations across the Territory.
"I want to congratulate these 29 women and men on reaching this special milestone and for their commitment and dedication in choosing a career with ACT Policing," Chief Police Officer Lee said.
"They will soon be out on the road and I wish them all the best in serving our wonderful community."
The 29 new police officers joining ACT Policing this week are in addition to the 52 recruits who have graduated and commenced with ACT Policing so far this year.
