Acting Director of Public Prosecutions appointed

Nicholas Papas QC has been appointed as Acting Director of Public Prosecutions as Director of Public Prosecutions Jack Karczewski QC commences extended personal leave.

The appointment formally commences on 12 July 2021.

Mr Karczewski QC plans to retire later this year after more than eight years in the role and a 37-year career in the NT justice system.

Mr Papas QC, who was the Deputy Commissioner to the Northern Territory Independent Commission Against Corruption, has extensive experience in the practice of criminal law from both prosecutorial and defence perspectives within the NT, other Australian jurisdictions, and internationally. He is also a former Victorian Chief Magistrate.

Victoria Engel continues in her role as Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions.
