Additional judges appointed to Norfolk Island Supreme Court

I am pleased to advise the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), has appointed two additional judges to the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island.

The Hon Wendy Jane Abraham is a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia and an Additional Judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory. Justice Abraham was called to the New South Wales Bar in June 2005 and had a national appellate practice, primarily in criminal and quasi-criminal matters.

From 2005 to 2009, she was retained full time to appear as national counsel for the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP). Justice Abraham was appointed as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia in May 2019.

The Hon Robert James Bromwich is a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia and an Additional Judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory. In 1998, he went to the NSW Bar and in 2009 was appointed Senior Counsel. He had a wide-ranging civil, criminal and public law practice at the Bar. In December 2012, Justice Bromwich was appointed Director of the CDPP where he implemented wide-ranging organisational reform. Justice Bromwich was appointed as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia in February 2016.

These appointments will ensure the Norfolk Island Supreme Court has access to judges when needed.

The wealth of experience in civil, public and criminal law that Justice Adams and Justice Bromwich bring to the Supreme Court will benefit the Norfolk Island community and justice system.
