Adelaide has been named one of the world's top destinations for 2022 in the latest National Geographic Traveller hot list, one of only two Australian destinations to feature.
Fresh off the heels of being declared the most liveable city in the nation, and third most liveable in the world by The Economist, National Geographic has recognised Adelaide as the second-best sustainable destination city.
Premier Steven Marshall said the new recognition highlights how Adelaide and South Australia have been transformed under a Liberal Government.
"It's fantastic to see Adelaide and South Australia start to get this recognition on the world stage," Premier Marshall said.
"National Geographic and The Economist are two world-renowned publications which are now highlighting Adelaide and South Australia as must visit destinations.
"South Australians have always known just how special our state and city are but since coming to government we have worked hard to make us an even more attractive place for people to live, work and play.
"For the first time in decades we have reversed the brain drain experienced under the former Labor Government and the future continues to look bright as people recognise our world-leading handling of the COVID-19 pandemic where we've been able to keep our state safe and our economy strong."
Minister for Environment and Water David Speirs said the Marshall Liberal Government's push to make Adelaide the world's second National Park City and a record investment in parks are all about improving liveability.
"We know how much people value green, open space and we believe if we become the world's second National Park City there will be economic, environmental and wellbeing benefits for our city now as well as for future generations," Minister Speirs said.
"Since coming to government we have increased the number of national parks across South Australia from 21 to 28 and doubled the area protected which will significantly boost conservation efforts as well as enhance our reputation as a world-class eco-tourism destination.
"This is all part of our ambitious plans to make South Australia a more liveable place which is why the Marshall Liberal Government is investing more than $130 million to improve our parks – the highest amount in the state's history.
"This is allowing us to deliver world-leading sustainability initiatives such as new on-ground rewilding projects including the reintroduction of platypus to the Torrens, creating a more butterfly friendly city, enhancing habitat and raising awareness about Adelaide's raptor species, as well as greening our city streets.
"I welcome the recognition from National Geographic as well as The Economist and our push to become a National Park City will only enhance our reputation on the world stage."
