Advanced Vehicle Tech Consultation for Road Safety

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

Submissions sought on the mandated installation of Emergency Lane Keeping Systems (ELKS) in vehicles that will save lives.

We are consulting on the introduction of Australian Design Rule (ADR) 107/00 which would see the mandatory fitment of ELKS in passenger vehicles and light goods vehicles.

An ELKS warns the driver and corrects the vehicle's trajectory when the vehicle unintentionally leaves the lane.

A large proportion of fatalities resulting from light vehicle crashes in Australia involve unintentional lane departures. Studies have shown that technologies alerting and assisting the driver of an unintentional lane departure can help reduce fatalities and/or injuries.

A recent report published by the Monash University Accident Research Centre, 'The Potential Benefits of Lane Keep Assist Systems in Australian Light Vehicles', estimated that a 100% fitment rate (when compared to a 0% fitment rate) of ELKS would result in over 70 fewer fatal crashes and more than 500 fewer serious injury crashes annually.

This consultation follows on from the Lane Keeping Systems for light vehicles consultation that closed in February 2022.

Consultation closes 5pm Wednesday 3 September 2025.
