Advisory Committees reinstated

Committees of Council will resume immediately after a resolution at the Extraordinary Council Meeting held yesterday unanimously supported reinstatement.

A report titled Review of Council Committees – Results of Public Exhibition was on the agenda after concerns were expressed in 2020 in relation to the operation of Council's Community Advisory Committees. It was resolved that a review of there structure and operation be undertaken. The draft Review of Council Committees was presented to Council on 25 November 2020 and placed on Public Exhibition until 26 January 2021.

Membership of committees will remain unchanged however Councillors will now be appointed chairpersons of the committees with the exception of the Access Committee who will appoint a community member as the chair and councillor Murat as a Council representative.

Reinstated committees include:

  • Economic Development Committee with Cr Murat as Chairperson and Councillors O'Connor and Bailey as members

  • Environmental Sustainability Committee with Cr Robinson as Chairperson and Cr O'Connor be added

  • Arts and Culture Committee with Mayor as Chairperson

  • Community Wellbeing Committee with Deputy Mayor Cr O'Brien as Chairperson

  • Sports Council with Cr Galletly as Chairperson

  • Access Committee with the Committee to elect the Chairperson and Cr Murat to be the Council representative

  • The Traffic Advisory and Aboriginal Advisory Committees continue unchanged

Mayor Tiley said the reinstatement of committees was a positive result for community participation.

"During the recent Councillor Coffee Catch-up we held at the Courthouse Coffee I was approached by Mr Parker who was concerned that people with a disability like himself no longer had a voice for improving accessibility and safety," said Mr Tiley

"All of the elected body agreed with Mr Parker that reinstating the Access Committee was a great outcome. This is democracy in action and I encourage anyone with an issue or idea to come along to one of our Coffee Catch-ups to discuss, we want to hear from you."

Members of Committees that are being reinstated will be contacted shortly with meeting agendas and dates.
