Horsham Rural City Council are part of an Alliance of nine North West Councils advocating for strategic investment into the region to ensure the region is ready if mining and renewable projects proposed come to fruition. The nine Councils of Horsham, Buloke, Hindmarsh, Yarriambiack, West Wimmera, Northern Grampians, Loddon, Swan Hill and Gannawarra cover nearly a third of Victoria's land area and form a strong united voice in advocating for the Wimmera Mallee region.
At the Australian Local Government Association's National General Assembly in Canberra this week, the Alliance of nine North West Councils met with a number of Ministers, members of parliament and parliamentary advisers to advocate for our region, including the Honourable Chris Bowen MP, (Minister for Climate Change and Energy), the Honourable Kristy McBain MP (Minister for Emergency Management) and Senator Jana Stewart (Senator for Victoria).
These conversations emphasised the importance of targeted support to manage the scale and speed of economic change driven by significant potential mining, renewable energy and infrastructure investment in Horsham and the wider region. If these projects proceed, targeted support will be critical to ensure that long-term community benefits are captured and retained locally.
