AEU report paints damning picture of Tasmanian education system

Tasmanian Labor

Today's AEU Tasmania report paints a damning picture of the state's education system under the Liberals.

The important issues raised by the AEU are consistent with the issues Labor has also been raising for years.

Tasmania's education system is in crisis and this Government has shown that fixing it isn't a priority.

Student outcomes are suffering because our hardworking teachers and support staff are being stretched to breaking point.

The Productivity Commission's Report on Government Services shows Tasmania has the lowest proportion of students at or above the minimum standard for reading and numeracy across all age groups, except the Northern Territory.

The results back up the latest NAPLAN results showing Tasmania sits behind the national average in every category.

Poor educational achievement can have a profound negative impact, perpetuating intergenerational disadvantage - so education needs to be a top priority for government.

It is clear that education isn't a top priority for this Government, which instead continues to obsess about building a stadium in Hobart for the nation's richest sport.

Labor will prioritise the education of our children and build a better future for all Tasmanians.
