Aggravated break and enter, police allegedly assaulted; man arrested, NSW

A man is under police guard in hospital after allegedly assaulting police following an aggravated break and enter in the state's west last night.

About 11.30pm (Saturday 26 January 2019), three 14-year-old boys and a 15-year-old boy were walking on Mercury Street, Broken Hill, when they saw a man approaching them near the intersection of Gypsum Street.

The group of youths entered a home on Pell Street, and a short time later the man allegedly kicked the front door, smashed a window and forced entry through the back door.

It's alleged he armed himself with a knife and threatened the youths.

The youths fled the scene uninjured and notified police.

Officers from Barrier Police District attended and attempted to arrest an 18-year-old man outside the home.

The man allegedly spat at the male constables and resisted arrest.

Additional police arrived, and the man was arrested and taken to Broken Hill Hospital under police guard to undergo an assessment.

Inquiries suggest the man and the youths were not known to each other.
