Leeton Shire Council resolved to reinstate the existing Alcohol-Free Zones in the Leeton and Yanco business areas for a four-year term at its March Ordinary Council Meeting.
Council had resolved at the December 2020 Council meeting to notify the community of its intention to re-establish alcohol-free zones in Leeton and Yanco Central Business Districts for another 4-year term.
Council's Manager Planning, Building and Health, Mr Francois Van der Berg, said no objections were received from the public, licensees, Leeton Multicultural Support Group, Leeton and District Local Aboriginal Land Council or NSW Police Force during the 30 day public consultation period held across January and February this year.
Mr Van Der Berg said Alcohol-Free Zones are tools under the Local Government Act 1993, section 144, to combat public drinking and to mitigate any associated criminal activity or antisocial behavior.
"Alcohol-free zones are an effective early intervention measure to prevent the escalation of irresponsible street drinking to incidents involving serious crime," he said.
Signage will be updated and/or installed in the affected areas in coming days.
