The Opposition-led Private Member's Bill sought to establish and give real and meaningful powers to this new and independent watchdog to enforce compliance with the Construction Industry Code and restore integrity to taxpayer funded major projects.
Following at least $15 billion of taxpayer money being lost to corruption on government Big Build sites, the Liberals and Nationals have released a comprehensive plan to clean up crime and corruption in Victoria. This plan includes the establishment of Construction Enforcement Victoria, which will have the power to:
- Investigate breaches of the Construction Industry Code;
- Issue banning orders to individuals;
- Refer allegations of criminal activity to Victoria Police; and
- Refer allegations of corruption to IBAC.
These powers strengthen the Liberals and Nationals' sweeping plan to enforce the law, find the money, and stop the rorts.
Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations, Brad Rowswell, said: "Construction Enforcement Victoria will ensure that the cancer of corruption in Victoria is stopped, hardworking Victorian taxpayers are not further ripped off, and the rights of construction workers are protected.
"A Wilson Liberal and Nationals Government will make sure that government work is delivered with integrity and accountability.
"Yet again, Jacinta Allan has demonstrated that she has absolutely no interest in fixing the biggest corruption scandal in Victoria's history, and therefore, no interest in giving hardworking Victorian taxpayers the respect that they deserve. What is she trying to hide?"
