Allens has advised Zenith Energy on:
- Australia's largest renewable energy project dedicated to mining operations comprising 256MW of wind generation, 138MW of solar generation and 138MW/300MWh of battery energy storage.
- The creation of a unique joint venture with Northern Star to develop a large-scale thermal gas-fired power station with a capacity of approximately 120MW and with a 132kV transmission network and substations.
The developments will supply electricity to Northern Star Resources' Kalgoorlie operations under long term power purchase agreements, and are together to be known as the Eastern Goldfields Power Projects.
Allens team was led by Jacqui Rowell (Partner, energy and resources) and Igor Bogdanich (Partner, corporate, mining and resources).
'The projects demonstrate how the mining sector is embracing the energy transition at scale. The renewables component is a clear signal of the industry's commitment to sustainability and the need for innovative solutions to meet growing demand. We're pleased to have worked alongside Zenith Energy on these landmark projects,' said Jacqui.
'The joint venture structure for the thermal power station reflects a disciplined and creative approach to capital allocation. We expect to see more of these innovative models as the sector balances energy security with the transition to cleaner sources, and as the mining sector looks to third parties increasingly for infrastructure collaboration,' said Igor.
Commissioning of the Eastern Goldfields Power Projects are anticipated to begin in mid-2027 subject to environmental and regulatory approvals.
