AMA calls for more support for GPs in lockdown areas

Australian Medical Association

This week has seen direct discussions between the AMA and the Government over expanded access to Medicare funded GP telephone consultations for patients in lockdown areas.

Strong feedback from members in the greater Sydney region has been that the more limited MBS item number structure for telephone consultations introduced on 1 July is hampering patient access to services and undermining practice viability.

The AMA has emphasised the need for the Government to act quickly, with many practices now having to pivot to the much greater use of telehealth in response to the NSW Government implementing a range of measures to try and get on top of the current Sydney outbreak.
