An outback emergency landing strip

Policing in remote locations is unique and the tasks are diverse, Queensland Police say.

Senior Constable Maria McCallum of Mount Isa Road Policing Unit is often deployed across the district to enforce road safety in all communities covered by the Mount Isa District.

Last month, police from Mount Isa Road Policing Unit assisted with the use of the emergency landing strip on the Birdsville Developmental Road.

"There was an accident, and they were airlifting two people out," Senior Constable McCallum said.

Emergency landing strips are located on roads in remote areas, for use by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

"They asked for assistance with closing the road so that they could use the emergency landing strip.

"We were at Birdsville so we volunteered to do the job. We had one car at one end, and one car at the other end, beyond the markings, to close the road.

"The plane landed safely, recovered the victims, and took off again without incident."
