Andrews' Anti-Bikie Laws fall flat

Liberal Party Victoria

Confirmation

today that Labor's anti-association laws are yet to be used again highlights the Daniel Andrews' failure to tackle serious organised crime in Victoria.

A review of Labor's anti-association orders, which promised to "stop bikie gangs in their tracks" has found that in the more than five years since their introduction, they remain unused with no orders having been issued to date.

Anti-association orders are an important policing tool to prevent criminals from organising and have been used under similar legislation in New South Wales to issue 8,556 warnings to 2,412 people within a four-year period.

Labor's failure to act on these broken laws comes as Victoria Police data confirms outlaw motorcycle gang members have risen from 1,200 to 2,112 between 2013 and 2020 (75 per cent) and anti-gun Firearms Prohibition Orders continue to be held back by a slow rollout.

Daniel Andrews' failed laws are giving organised criminals across the nation the green light in Victoria, meaning more serious violent, drug and gun crime on our streets and placing the safety of ordinary Victorians at risk.

As stated by Shadow Minister for Police & Community Safety, David Southwick:

"It's clear Daniel Andrews is asleep at the wheel on community safety when after 5 years, these broken laws still haven't been fixed.

"Daniel Andrews' botched anti-bikie laws are giving serious criminals a free ride and turning Victoria into a honey pot for organised crime, drugs and violence.

"Labor has left police with one hand tied behind their back and local communities fending for themselves.

"Daniel Andrews needs to bring new laws before the Parliament immediately to give the police the powers they need to do their job."
