Rockhampton Regional Council this week endorsed the Animal Management Plan, a 26-page strategy aimed at promoting and encouraging responsible pet ownership within the region.
Planning and Regulation Councillor Grant Mathers said the plan outlines the services Council currently provides while setting clear objectives for the next five years.
"With over 15,000 registered animals in the Rockhampton Region, we as a Council need to ensure there is a balance between ensuring pets are safe and well cared for, public spaces are clean and welcoming, and everyone — pet owners and non-pet owners alike — can enjoy their community," Cr Mathers said.
"The Animal Management Plan is what guides Council in doing this – it's a roadmap for helping people in our region be great pet owners, and how pets and people can live together peacefully while outlining how Council responds to animal-related issues."
Cr Mathers said it also incorporates the thoughts and viewpoints from the community directly.
"Council listened to the community and used that feedback to shape the plan, and we're proud to say that it highlights what matters most to locals when it comes to pets — like safety, education, and support," Cr Mathers said.
"When it comes to educating our community about responsible pet ownership, the plan covers education and awareness through school programs and community events like Pets in the Park and Pet Expo.
"Also utilising easy-to-understand fact sheets and other resources to help people care for their pets.
"We also want to encourage responsible pet owners through simple yet effective methods like providing discounts for desexing and microchipping, incentives for registering pets and assisting with barking dogs and safe enclosures."
Community safety was also on the priority list with Council highlighting it would work to increasing proactive patrols and improving processes across all animal management as well as providing better training for officers and clearer communication with residents.
