A talented group of 19 emerging creative and cultural workers from across Australia will take part in the Australia Council Biennale Delegates Program.
Participants will engage with five program facilitators through online gatherings and one in-person (NSW) residency between February 2022 to June 2022.
They will have the opportunity to learn from artists, curators and producers involved in biennales including the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, Hawaiʻi Triennial, Documenta 15 and The Biennale of Sydney.
Australia Council Head of Industry Development Jade Lillie said:
"The 2022 group of Biennale Delegates represent a diverse cross-section of skills, interests and individuals – including strong representation of First Nations, independent artists, curators, writers, creative producers and arts workers from major national cultural institutions.
The delegation will be mentored and guided through the program by a phenomenal group of facilitators; Clothilde Bullen, Angie Abdilla, Léuli Eshrāghi, Khaled Sabsabi and Neha Kale.
This year's program theme is 're(situate)' – a prompt for participants to consider different biennale platforms and identify key learnings for future biennales within an Australian and regional context."
The program is one of a suite of professional development programs that leverage Australia's participation at the Venice Biennale to provide opportunities for the Australian visual arts sector. Whilst this 2022 edition does not include international travel, the hybrid program will provide invaluable international engagement and exposure to the 19 early career participants.
This Biennale Delegates Program runs alongside the Australian Pavilion Invigilation Program that will engage Australians living in Europe to oversee the day-to-day visitor experience of Marco Fusinato's exhibition during the Venice Biennale, curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor.
The Australia Council for the Arts is the Commissioner for Australia's national participation at the International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.
The 2022 Biennale Delegates Program is generously supported by state and territory partners including ArtsACT, Create NSW, Arts NT, Arts Queensland, Arts South Australia, Arts Tasmania and Creative Victoria and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries - Western Australia as well as the Cross Family Foundations.
