Arafura Games: Sign up on International Volunteer Day

Today is International Volunteer Day and Minister for the Arafura Games, Ken Vowles, said it is the perfect time to sign up to be part of the Arafura Games fun.

The Games, which were scrapped by the former CLP government, will return from April 26 to May 4, 2019, and a number of volunteers will be needed to fill a variety of roles.

Mr Vowles was joined by repeat Arafura Games volunteer Margaret Sands from Palmerston. Mrs Sands has volunteered at three previous Arafura Games and was the first person to sign up when volunteer registrations for the 2019 Arafura Games went live on October 26 this year.

Volunteers must be aged 16 or over when they apply, hold a valid Ochre Card as of April 2019 and be available between April 26 and May 4. To find out more visit arafuragames.nt.gov.au

As stated by Minister for the Arafura Games, Ken Vowles:

As well as being a sporting event and an opportunity to strengthen and build relationships with our Asia-Pacific neighbours, the Arafura Games are also a community event, and volunteering is one way people from all sectors of the community can get involved.

Ive been a volunteer at previous Arafura Games, as well as a competitor and an official, and it really is an unforgettable experience.

There are five categories you can volunteer in Games Services, Games Operations, media and Communications, Sport Competition and Sport Medicine so there are opportunities for people with a range of skills to take part.

Sign up and be part of something you will never forget.

As stated by Margaret Sands:

I really enjoy volunteering as its a great way to meet new people. Everyone at the Arafura Games is so friendly and the whole atmosphere is just awesome.

Id definitely encourage people to register as a volunteer as its a really worthwhile experience, plus its a lot of fun.
