A sea of blue will light up Ararat Town Hall tonight as it shines in support of Blue Ribbon Day.
Coinciding with National Police Remembrance Day each year, Blue Ribbon Day is a chance for our community to say thank you to Victoria Police members who protect and serve our community and ensure those who have fallen are never forgotten.
Ararat Rural City CEO Dr Tim Harrison emphasised the importance of honouring the memory of those who have fallen.
"Blue Ribbon Day is very special for many members of our community, and Council will continue to shine a light on the day in support of all Victoria Police members," Dr Harrison said.
"It's an opportunity for Council and the wider community to show their appreciation by wearing a blue ribbon in remembrance of the those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Today we say thank you and that you will never be forgotten.
"We are fortunate to be able to unite in person today to mark the occasion. A small group, including the Mayor and I, had the honour of laying a wreath in front of Ararat Police Station this morning.
"Additionally, Council has taken steps to honour the occasion by flying the Blue Ribbon flag, lighting up the town hall and providing Blue Ribbon Pins at Council reception and the Visitor Information Centre.
"The Blue Ribbon Foundation carries out valuable work honouring the memory of Victoria Police killed in the line of duty and locally, they make a vital contribution through the money they raise to improve emergency facilities for the East Grampians Health Service."
Acting President of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation - Ararat Branch Sergeant, Shaun Allen appreciates the support from Council to mark the occasion.
"This year, due to coronavirus we haven't been able to celebrate the way we would like but are pleased that we were able to carry out a small ceremony today," Sergeant Allen said.
"Being a sworn member myself, it's a very important day to remember our colleagues and friends. In particular, with the Eastern Freeway tragedy - it's never been more important to remember those who have fallen.
"What's more important is that our community and Council members are helping us to acknowledge them. The extra effort shown by Council with the flag and lighting up town hall is special, and I hope people will show their support and have a look at it."
