Armed man arrested in Newcastle

Police have arrested a man who was allegedly armed with a knife and a mask after a call from a concerned member of the public at Newcastle last night, NSW Police say.

About 9.45pm today, police received a call about a man acting suspiciously outside a shopping centre at Coolamin Road, Waratah.

Police arrived soon after and spoke with a 32-year-old man before subjecting him to a search.

It will be alleged they located a large knife, a face-covering mask and gloves.

The man was placed under arrest and taken to Waratah Police Station where he was charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence, possess means of disguising face with intent to commit indictable offence, and custody of a knife in a public place.

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court tomorrow.

Inquiries are continuing.
