Arrest following CBD incident

Police and Critical Incident Response Team members have arrested a person aged in their early teens following an incident in Melbourne’s CBD this morning, Victoria Police say.

Emergency crews responded to reports of a car allegedly being driven erratically along Flinders Street shortly before 8am.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be established, however it is believed members of the public threw a bike beneath the vehicle in an attempt to stop it.

The driver, who was allegedly armed with a knife, was tasered and arrested at the corner of Flinders and Swanston streets.

He has been taken to hospital for assessment.

The intersection of Swanston Street and Flinders Street has now reopened.

Victoria Police are not treating the incident as terrorism-related.

Members of the public are also reminded there will be a highly-visible police presence across the weekend, particularly for those heading to the MCG for today’s AFL Grand Final and at major transport hubs and other live events across the city.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
