Following the commencement of a pilot phase for the electronic monitoring of high
risk family violence perpetrators in the south of the state, a number of perpetrators have been ordered by the Hobart Magistrates Court to be fitted with an electronic monitoring device. These orders are additional conditions to family violence orders issued by
the Court, Tasmania Police say.
On 7 December 2018, Tasmania Police arrested a 19-year-old Sorell man identified as a high risk family violence perpetrator. He had previously been fitted with an electronic monitoring device and subsequently breached conditions of his family violence
order, by:
- Failing to charge the electronic monitoring device,
- Failing to remain contactable with Tasmania Police via telephone at all times,
- Failing to comply with all reasonable and lawful directions given to him by a police officer in relation to electronic monitoring equipment, and
- Approaching within 500m of the person to be protected.
The man was detained by police to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court.
On 10 December 2018, he was remanded in custody to appear at a later date.
The fitting of the electronic monitoring device assisted police to readily locate the high risk family violence perpetrator and has afforded greater protection for a victim of
family violence.
The arrest and detention of the perpetrator is evidence of the dedication of Tasmania Police to reduce family violence and the effectiveness of electronic monitoring of high risk family violence perpetrators.
