Police have seized 10 firearms, more than 1000 rounds of ammunition, swords, knives, and cross-bows following the search of a home in Sydney’s west, NSW Police say.
Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Drug and Firearms Squad have been conducting ongoing inquiries into the illegal possession and supply of firearms across Sydney.
Acting on information from Australian Border Force relating to the importation of firearm parts, detectives executed a search warrant at a home at Richmond about 9am on Tuesday (28 August 2018).
Detectives also served Firearms and Weapons Prohibition Orders on the 64-year-old male resident.
During the search of the property, officers located and seized five rifles, including a semi-automatic Norinco SKS; various firearm parts and accessories, more than 2000 rounds of ammunition of various calibres, three cross-bows and more than 100 arrows, more than 100 knives and swords, ballistic vests, armoured helmets, handcuffs, documentation, literature, and a computer.
The man was arrested and taken to Windsor Police Station, before being taken to hospital for assessment.
The following day (Wednesday 29 August 2018), police were contacted after a suspicious bag was located hidden in a concrete stairwell during building works at the rear of the property.
Investigators returned to the home and located five further firearms, including pistols and handguns.
All of the seized firearms have been submitted for forensic and ballistic examination.
It is expected the man will be charged with firearms and weapons offences on release from hospital.
