Arson Unit detectives have charged an alleged 'arsonist for hire' following an investigation into the firebombing of a restaurant in Marrickville.
Just before 1am on Friday 30 May 2025, emergency services were called to Tuohy Lane in Marrickville following reports of a fire in the courtyard of a restaurant.
The blaze was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW and a crime scene was established, which was examined by specialist police.
Officers from Inner West Police Area Command commenced investigations with State Crime Command's Financial Crime Squad Arson Unit.
Initial inquiries revealed accelerant and an explosive device – most likely a firework – was used to light the fire at the restaurant.
Police were also told the restaurant had been the target of an arson attack the night before.
Following extensive inquiries, including a public appeal for information, about 9am on Tuesday 15 July 2025, detectives executed two search warrants in San Remo and Blue Haven.
In San Remo, police arrested a 30-year-old man. He was taken to Wyong Police Station where he was charged with two counts of damage property by fire/explosion, two counts of drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, two counts of driver not disclose identity of driver/passenger as required, possess prohibited drug and fail to comply digital evidence access order direction.
The man was refused bail and appeared in Bail Division Court 6 the next day (Wednesday 16 July 2025).
Investigations into an arson attack in Ettalong, which police believe may be linked, are continuing.
