Assault and weapons charges in Mount Pleasant, QLD

Police have charged a 22-year-old man following an alleged incident involving a firearm in Mount Pleasant early this morning, Queensland Police say.

Police will allege they attempted to intercept a taxi on Windmill Crossing about 3.15am as they wished to speak with the man, who was a passenger, in relation to an outstanding matter.

Police will allege the man produced a firearm and demanded the taxi driver continue driving.

The taxi driver stopped the vehicle and the man fled from the vehicle on foot.

Police apprehended the man a short time later on Trade Court.

During a search police allegedly located a small quantity of methylamphetamines in the man’s possession, as well as a firearm and ammunition left inside the taxi.

The 38-year-old male taxi driver was not physically injured during the incident.

A 22-year-old East Mackay man has been charged with one count each of serious assault, enter premises and commit indictable offence, possess shortened firearm, possessing dangerous drugs and authority required to possess explosives.

He is scheduled to appear in the Mackay Magistrates Court this afternoon.
