Assault and wilful damage charges in Clontarf, QLD

Staff and patrons at a Clontarf pizza business were threatened by a man allegedly armed with a knife who yelled and screamed whilst throwing furniture around and cutting the phone line last night, Queensland Police say.

A man entered the Hornibrook Esplanade business around 5.45pm and approached the front counter where an 18-year-old female employee was taking orders on the phone.

Police will allege the man swept everything off the counter top and onto the floor, throwing several items at the girl, which struck her in the arm.

The man then allegedly produced a knife, leant over the counter and cut the cord of the phone the teen was using.

Police will further allege the man threw a stool over the counter and into the kitchen area before running behind the counter continuing to yell and scream at the staff. He allegedly pulled a screen off the wall before grabbing a glass top bench and smashing it.

The man then walked outside, picking up a flag banner and allegedly throwing it towards a group of diners, before picking up a chair and hitting one of them in the arm, causing a laceration. The injured 23-year-old man was later transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment, including suturing of his wound.

The man walked across the Hornibrook Esplanade and entered the water, stopping about 75 metres from shore, resting on a clump of rocks.

Police entered the water and negotiated with the man who eventually returned to shore and was taken into custody.

Moreton Bay detectives charged a 26-year-old man with a total of eight offences including two counts of common assault and one count each of assault occasioning bodily harm, going armed so as to cause fear, wilful damage, enter premises and commit an indictable offence and contravene a direction.

The man was denied police bail and remanded in custody overnight. He is due to appear in the Redcliffe Magistrates Court this morning.
