Assault of an inmate at Atlantic Institution 15 August

On August 12, 2020, two inmates were involved in an altercation at Atlantic Institution, a maximum security federal institution. Both injured inmates were evaluated by staff members and one was transported to an outside hospital to receive treatment.

The Blackville detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the institution are presently investigating the incident.

The inmates involved have been identified and the appropriate actions have been taken.

The warden has ordered a lockdown and an exceptional search of part of the institution. Normal operations will resume when it is considered safe to do so.

The safety and security of institutions, their staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances of the incident and take the appropriate measures.
