Attempted armed robbery charges at Townsville

Police have charged a man after he allegedly attempted to steal a car in Aitkenvale overnight.

It will be alleged at 11.40pm a 26-year-old man was sitting in his car which was parked at a shopping centre on Nathan Street.

A man has opened the door and threatened the man with a knife demanding the car. The 26-year-man has got out of the car and a struggled has ensured during which the man received wounds to his right hand.

A witness, whilst recording the incident on his phone, has approached the man who then fled the scene.

Police located the man in Elizabeth Street a short time later and arrested him.

The 19-year-old Vincent man has been charged with one count each of wounding, attempted robbery whilst armed, unlawful entry of a vehicle for committing indicatable offence at night whilst armed and common assault. He will appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court today, August 11.

The 26-year-old victim remains at the Townsville University Hospital with serious injuries to his right hand.
