Attempted murder charge after stabbing in Merrylands

Police have charged a man with attempted murder after an alleged stabbing in Sydney’s west yesterday, NSW Police say.

Just before 4pm (Friday 5 October 2018), a 66-year-old man stopped his Toyota Rav 4 on Newman Street, Merrylands, at the intersection with Burford Street, when a 29-year-old man, allegedly armed with a knife, approached him.

It will be alleged he stabbed the older man in the chest before demanding the keys to his car.

The man then stabbed the victim again, partially severing his left ear. He attempted to stab the man a third time, however the victim grabbed the knife, causing a severe laceration to his hand.

The offender then fled the scene after stealing a garage door opener.

Police were contacted and the victim was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Investigations suggest a man may have attempted to rob an unidentified woman on Cambridge Street, Merrylands, shortly afterwards.

Police urge this woman to come forward.

About 5.15pm, the same 29-year-old man allegedly stole a Holden Calais sedan from Lockwood Street, Merrylands, before attempting to sell it to a man on Montrose Street.

Police from Cumberland Local Area Command attended and arrested him a short time later.

The man was taken to Granville Police Station where he was charged with attempted murder, armed robbery with wounding, steal motor vehicle and malicious damage.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Saturday 6 October 2018).

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
