Attempted robbery - Figtree, south of Wollongong, NSW

Police are investigating following the attempted robbery of a woman south of Wollongong overnight, NSW Police say.

About 7.50pm today, a 51-year-old woman was walking south on the footpath alongside the Princes Highway at Figtree near Cobblers Hill when she was grabbed from behind by a man.

The woman was carrying shopping bags and two shoulder bags which fell to the ground before the man ran from the scene empty handed towards William Street.

Officers from Wollongong Local Area Command and the dog unit were notified of the incident and patrolled the area for the man without success.

Investigating officers would like to speak with a man who may be able to assist with inquiries.

He is described as being about 175cm tall with short dark hair and was last seen wearing a grey track suit.

The woman suffered minor injuries during the incident.
