The recent severe rain events have resulted in a delay to the sealing of the remainder of the Towamba and Burragate roads, with emergency repairs the current focus.
Landslips and slope stability issues in the mountainous section between Towamba and the Princes Highway, damage to roadside drainage and batters, wash outs and general surface damage to the remaining unsealed sections have been prioritised for repair.
Council's Project Services Manager, Daniel Djikic said it's vital these repairs take precedence for the safety of road users.
"We have received some concerns from residents in the Towamba and Burragate areas about the state of some of the remaining unsealed sections and we want to assure the community that the necessary repairs are underway," Mr Djikic said.
"Provided there are no further setbacks we are looking at about a month more of repairs before we can return to the upgrade project.
"There are also some sections of road where Indigenous artefacts have been found and we are awaiting an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP) before any upgrade or sealing work can be undertaken in these areas.
"In the interim, we have received approval to undertake emergency maintenance work on these sections due to damage caused by the recent flood events, so we will be able to return these sections to their previous condition.
"The newly-sealed sections of the roads held up really well through the wet weather which is a great result and demonstrates the importance and value of this project," Mr Djikic said.
Residents and road users are encouraged to drive with caution and observe speed restrictions when travelling through the construction zones and newly sealed sections.
