Auslan Kits Enhance Access at Hobsons Bay Libraries

Libraries across Hobsons Bay are now even more accessible after Auslan and braille kits were added to the borrowing collection.

The kits pair an English-language children's book with Auslan signage and themed tactile objects, such as toys and props, helping young readers engage with key concepts including weather, animals and everyday activities.

The kits are designed to support accessible learning for children and families, both for hearing and d/Deaf people.

Simple stories are accessible to younger children who might be learning key word signs at childcare or kindergarten, while flashcards can be used for primary school aged children to add complexity.

Council recently hosted a story time event at Newport Community Hub in February to launch the roll out of the kits, featuring Deaf creator, children's entertainer and actor David Grant.

Mr Grant also presented a storytime to grade five Newport Lakes Primary School students, who learn Auslan as a part of their school curriculum.

The new kits are available at all Hobsons Bay libraries upon request.

Quotes attributable to Mayor of Hobsons Bay, Cr Diana Grima:

"Our libraries are for everyone.

"It's great to see these kits supporting hearing and deaf families and children. It enables them to learn more about this language that makes our community a more accessible and inclusive place."

Quotes attributable to David Grant:

"I felt incredibly grateful to lead Auslan story time. Seeing families learn together and witnessing the care the grade five students brought to their questions was a testament to how important early exposure and representation are.

"The Auslan kits by library staff were thoughtfully designed and supported meaningful learning for both children and parents."
