Australia announces new Consul-General in Istanbul

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Today I announce the appointment of Mr Tony Huber as Australia's next Consul-General in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Türkiye and Australia have a productive and developing relationship. We maintain a substantial dialogue across a wide range of areas including cooperation on security, ANZAC Day commemorations, and participation in the G20 and MIKTA Forums.

Australia and Türkiye also share close people-to-people links. The 32,000 Australian residents born in Türkiye and 73,000 Australians claiming Turkish ancestry make a significant contribution to modern Australian society and culture.

Istanbul is world business hub connecting Europe and Asia and is a central point for our support to Australian interests in Türkiye.

Mr Huber is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Director, Non-Tariff Barrier Strategies Section.

Mr Huber has previously served overseas as Consul-General in Mumbai and had earlier postings to Canada, the United States and India.

I thank Acting Consul-General Ms Antoinette Merrillees for her contributions to advancing Australia's interests in Istanbul.
