Australia contributes to European Union's Advisory Mission in Iraq

Minister for Foreign Affairs Senator the Hon Marise Payne

The Coalition Government will provide a senior Australian humanitarian expert to join the European Union's Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM Iraq).

The deployment commences today, following recent formal confirmation from my EU counterpart, the High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini, that the Australian deployment received final approvals in the EU.

This is a significant deployment as it is the first time Australia has made a contribution to an EU-led humanitarian mission through Australia Assists, which is implemented by RedR Australia.

The deployment underlines Australia's internationally recognised expertise in humanitarian capacity building. The EU mission in Iraq was established in 2017.

The deployment, which is covered by the crisis management agreement between Australia and the EU, continues the strong dialogue and cooperation between us and the EU in this important field.
