Australia Set for Warm, Sunny Weekend

BOM
Hello, it's Angus here at the Bureau of Meteorology. It is nearly the weekend and quite a big sporting weekend around the country. Lots of people eye on the forecast to see if we'll be getting a fine, sunny weather for Saturday and Sunday. And for the most part, we will. The clear skies, which have persisted across Australia for most of the week so far, will continue and almost all areas.

Couple of exceptions to that, mostly down in the south, including across Tasmania here. It's been a wet, windy week down there and that will continue into Saturday, and a couple of other southern places might pick up a little bit of rainfall, but it really won't be much. So let's go around the states for Saturday's forecast and it's a bright, sunny and warm day across Queensland.

Temperatures are above the seasonal averages in most areas, including the south-east, which gives us a 28 degree maximum in Brisbane, and that's as high as 35 out through some western districts. There will be a little bit of cloud between Mackay and Cairns and maybe a light shower, but don't read too much into that, most of the day will be fine.

It's also warm and sunny across most of New South Wales. Take a look at Sydney 31 degrees and if it does reach 30, that'll be the first time since March, so it has been a while since we've seen temperatures this high. It's also 29 Newcastle, 28 Wollongong, 28 up in Coffs Harbour. Sunny skies will be the dominant factor overhead, but there will be a little bit of cloud and some late cooler temperatures into the very far south of the state, and that might bring a shower or even a thunderstorm in the evening to the Riverina area.

So, Melbourne, game time tomorrow. How's the weather looking? Well, pretty good actually. There'll be some cloud overhead, certainly, it's a mild day with a high of 19, but the rain should stay away certainly through the afternoon when the match is on. Maybe that risk of a shower does increase later into the evening. Elsewhere, across Victoria, a fairly mild day.

It's a mixture of sunshine and cloud overhead. Quite windy along the south coast, including down here for Wilsons Prom, with a high of 15 degrees. A few showers will build, particularly in the afternoon, across the south-west of the state, but rainfall totals will be low. And I wish I could say the wind was easing off for Tasmania, but it's not really the case.

It's another breezy day, I know you've had several of those through the week so far. The wind is coming in from the west. That means coming from this side and it will continue to bring showers, with a chance of hail and thunderstorms out through western districts. Across the North Coast, including for Launceston, one or two showers with some gaps in there, and for Hobart, probably better just to call it the chance of a shower as the day will be mostly, if not completely dry.

Mild weather is expected for South Australia on Saturday. There'll be some cloud cover for sure across these southern areas, although further north it is sunny and hot. We'll see one or two light showers hit the south coast, the peninsulas and the islands, but anywhere that does get rain is likely to only see a very small amount, and most people will get nothing at all.

It's been a hot week in the west through the week so far, and that mostly continues into Saturday, certainly bright sunny skies. Temperatures 22 degrees here in Perth up to about mid 20s inland and then mid 30s up around the Pilbara. The only spot which is not going to have a bright, mostly sunny day is the very far south coast with a bit of extra cloud and one or two light showers for Albany and Esperance.

And across Australia's north it is warm up here too, sunny as well. The wind from earlier in the week has eased off across the Territory, and that means that the fire dangers have also come down to a more moderate level. There will be some cloud and a few showers building around the western Top End, especially through the afternoon, and that could mean a little bit of rainfall around Darwin, down to Wadeye, maybe across to Katherine, but very hit and miss wet weather. Certainly no guarantee you'll see anything at all, but a few places will pick up a bit of afternoon or evening rain, dry elsewhere.

And we'll take a look at Sunday as well, because we are heading into the weekend, and for most places the forecast doesn't change a lot. Still windy for Tasmania, gets a little bit cooler across Victoria and cloudy through Melbourne. The main change in the forecast comes through here, with an increased risk of showers and even some storms possible across the mountains and the coast of New South Wales and ACT. So Canberra, Sydney could both see a bit of rain on Sunday, maybe a rumble of thunder. Further north, a fine day in Brisbane once again, pretty much fine and clear across the north, and Perth will pick up a line of showers as a weak cold front arrives.

That's all I've got for you for now, but you can always check in on your weather throughout the course of the weekend on the Bureau's website, app or social media. Thanks for watching and have a lovely day.
