Australians Urged To Give Hope This DonateLife Week

Department of Health

The Albanese Government is encouraging all Australians to give hope and register as organ and tissue donors.

Right now, around 1,800 Australians are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.

Currently, only 36 per cent of Australians have joined the Australian Organ Donor Register. It's not because people don't support organ donation - 4 in 5 Australians say they do. The challenge is turning that support into action with two simple steps.

Donation is made possible when your family knows and supports your wishes to donate, and registration is the best way to communicate your wishes.

Around 8 in 10 of families agree to donation when you are registered. But only 4 in 10 families agree when your wishes are unknown.

Registration is simple and only takes a minute at donatelife.gov.au or through your Medicare account.

DonateLife Week is Australia's major public awareness week to encourage more Australians to register and support organ and tissue donation in Australia.

The week runs from today, Sunday 27 July until next Sunday 3 August, with events and activities taking place around the country.

Today, Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon. Rebecca White MP, launched DonateLife Week 2025 at the Royal Hobart Hospital to encourage all Australians to register for donation.

Assistant Minister White was joined by Ms Brooke Dillon, who had a life-changing kidney transplant in 2022 and Mr Cuan Van Staden, who is waiting for a kidney transplant.

Quotes attributable to Assistant Minister White:

"DonateLife Week, is our national call to action - a chance for every Australian to help save lives.

"It only takes one minute to register as an organ and tissue donor at donatlife.gov.au or through your Medicare account. Then, tell your family you want to be a donor - you could save a life.

"In 2024, there was a record 25 organ donors in Tasmania - the highest ever since the national DonateLife program was established. I want to sincerely thank DonateLife Tasmania and our hospital teams for their tireless work and leadership in best practice donation."
