Australia's greenhouse gas emissions: June 2021 quarterly update

Australia's emissions continue to fall according to the latest Quarterly Update of Australia's National Greenhouse Gas Inventory.

The update estimates Australia's total greenhouse gas emissions to the end of June 2021.

Emissions in the year to June 2021 were 498.9 million tonnes - 2.1% or 10.8 million tonnes lower than the previous year. They were 20.4% lower than in 2005 (the baseline year for the Paris Agreement).

The results reflect:

  • long-term reductions in emissions from electricity
  • a decrease in stationary energy (excluding electricity) emissions
  • reduced fugitive emissions
  • the impacts of COVID-19 restrictions on transport sector emissions.
