Aviator's efforts recognised by police

The use of unmanned aerial systems by Air Force Security Forces has led to a collaboration with Queensland Police that has recognised Flight Sergeant William Gill of 2 Security Force Squadron, RAAF Base Amberley.

Six years ago, Flight Sergeant Gill's idea to use the R70 Sky Ranger was given the green light after the remotely piloted aircraft system was demonstrated to provide real-time, full-motion video feed to first responders, patrols and commanders.

The efforts of Combat Support Group and Air Force Security Forces to develop the highly versatile capability have helped to introduce the systems into the Queensland Police Service, with Flight Sergeant Gill supporting the program as a capability advisor.

"The cooperation on unmanned aerial systems allows the sharing of skills and resources and better communication between civilian agencies and Defence, which has led to more effective emergency responses to situations such as the recent floods," Flight Sergeant Gill said.

Queensland Police Service has recognised Flight Sergeant Gill's involvement in the program by awarding him an Assistant Commissioner's certificate.

"I was very humbled and privileged to receive the certificate. This recognition further encapsulates the hard work and achievement of a number of individuals across both organisations who have collaborated to make this joint force project a success," Flight Sergeant Gill said.

"I look forward to continuing the collaboration between Air Force and the Queensland Police The strength of our cooperation has demonstrated many benefits and opportunities for the future."

Inspector Daniel Bust, from Police Air Operations at Queensland Police Service said that working with the Air Force helped develop how police use the systems.

"In the fast evolving world of remotely piloted aircraft systems, emerging technologies must be identified and evaluated promptly," Inspector Bust said.

"Engagement and cooperation with 2 Security Force Squadron enables information, thoughts and ideas beneficial to the Queensland Police Service and the Air Force to be shared."
