Awards celebrate Greater Geelong women making difference

The extraordinary contributions and leadership roles of women in Greater Geelong were celebrated with the annual Women in Community Life Awards on Wednesday 8 March 2023, International Women's Day.

Now in their eighth year the awards have seen more than 20 women nominated across seven categories for their outstanding achievements in areas including disability rights, women's health, climate action, education, human rights, innovation for a gender-neutral future and leadership in the community as a First Nations Woman.

The Women in Community Life awards commenced in 2016 and have attracted significant interest across the region since their inception.

Nominations for the awards in seven categories are independently assessed by members of the Women in Community Life Advisory Group, City of Greater Geelong staff and category sponsors.

This year's International Women's Day event theme was 'Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender equal future' and, featured a keynote address by Code Like a Girl co-founder Ally Watson OAM.

Ally is passionate about gender equality in technology and is certain to provide a thought-provoking presentation as Greater Geelong residents celebrate the efforts and achievements of local women.

The event was held on Level 2 of Wurriki Nyal, 137-149 Mercer Street in Geelong at 5:00pm.

While admission was free, attendees were required to book tickets.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

Acknowledging the contribution of women in the community is a fitting way to mark International Women's Day.

I congratulate all women on their nominations and thank them for their outstanding contributions toward making Geelong such a great place to live. International Women's Day and the accompanying awards ceremony enables us to recognise and celebrate local women for their achievements in contributing to a fairer, more equitable community.

Councillor Stephanie Asher

The awards ceremony provided an opportunity to showcase many of the uplifting contributions the nominees are making in the community.

The experiences of each of our nominees provides an inspiring story and speaks to their dedication, in both professional and volunteer roles, to making our community a great place to live.

There are so many women in the Greater Geelong region who have worked tirelessly and made extraordinary contributions to the community, and these awards provide well-deserved acknowledgement of that hard work.
