Police Minister Michelle Roberts has joined the Commissioner of Police in commending the courageous actions of 47 recipients of WA Police Force Bravery Awards.
The officers, from both metropolitan and country locations across Western Australia, have been recognised for putting themselves at extreme risk to perform exceptional acts of bravery while both on duty or off duty.
Some of the situations included officers braving fire and flames to rescue people trapped in burning buildings or vehicles, battling and negotiating with armed or violent offenders, and taking on treacherous oceans and waterways to rescue people from drowning.
Certificates of Appreciation were also presented to six civilians who acted in an outstanding way, to put their own safety aside to help others during what was a very hazardous situation.
Thirteen officers awarded a Cross for Bravery - for an act of most conspicuous courage whereby the officer placed themselves at risk of peril and risk of significant personal injury or death.
Twelve officers awarded a Special Commendation - for an act of bravery while putting themselves at risk of personal injury.
Eight officers awarded a Commissioner's Commendation - for meritorious conduct and devotion to duty under stressful conditions.
Eight officers awarded a Certificate of Outstanding Performance - for acts that went well above and beyond the course of their normal duty.
As stated by Police Minister Michelle Roberts:
"These awards recognise exceptional service at great personal risk.
"Our community expects that our police will confront danger as part of their daily work.
"But these officers have gone far beyond what is expected or required.
"I also want to thank the civilians who put their own safety aside and stepped up to help our police.
"It is important that we remind ourselves of the risks our police run every day to keep us safe and the kinds of sacrifices that they can be called upon to make."
