Backing Our Grassroots Sporting Clubs

Tasmanian Government

Kingborough's Sherburd Park is among 30 projects sharing in a $5 million grant program that is backing Tasmania's grassroots sporting clubs.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff joined Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt to announce the latest round of the Tasmanian Government's Active Infrastructure Grant program, which delivers safe, inclusive and accessible spaces.

"We want to encourage more Tasmanians to get active and participate in sport," Premier Rockliff said.

"This investment is backing sporting clubs and councils to improve facilities across the State.

"Together with Kingborough Council, we are investing more than $925,000 to build new, fit-for-purpose changeroom facilities at Sherburd Park.

"This is just one example of the 30 co-funded sporting projects our Government is delivering for Tasmanians by investing in improved facilities across the State."

Successful projects include a variety of sports and recreational activities, including paddle sports, tennis, AFL, lawn bowls and cricket.

Mayor Wriedt said Sherburd Oval is an important facility for the local sporting community, and this upgrade ensures it can continue to serve our growing region.

"This project is about removing barriers," Ms Wriedt said.

"Fully accessible changerooms, and safe, modern amenities will open the door to more women, juniors and people with mobility challenges who have previously felt unable to use the ageing facilities.

"Our local clubs are growing quickly, and we need infrastructure that grows with them.

"The new facilities will help strengthen membership across cricket and soccer, and will support the return of women's and junior teams that simply couldn't be accommodated before.

"This is a significant investment in the health, wellbeing and future of the Blackmans Bay community.

"It demonstrates what can be achieved when Council and the State Government work together to deliver facilities that genuinely meet the needs of local people."

Premier Rockliff said sport and active recreation are at the heart of our communities.

"By investing in modern, inclusive and accessible facilities, we are ensuring more Tasmanians can get involved, stay active and enjoy the many benefits," the Premier said.

"These grants will help local clubs and councils deliver projects that reduce barriers to participation and encourage Tasmanians to get active."
