Stoked skaters hanging out for new skate bowl

Skaters in East Gippsland will be thrilled to see the skate park redevelopment at Davison Oval begin on June 1

The redevelopment, being undertaken by East Gippsland Shire Council, will create an inviting space for the community to enjoy well into the future and add another drawcard for visitors alongside the popular All Abilities Playground.

The skate park currently closed due to COVID-19 and temporary fencing will be in place while the major redevelopment work is undertaken. Completion of the project is expected in September 2020.

Mayor Cr John White said the $495,000 project includes a design for all ages and skill levels. It will feature a fully enclosed bowl, 'street' course with hips, banks, ledges, ramps and stairs, and conversion of the current concrete slab to an open plaza area with garden beds.

"This exciting project will create a regional skating hub to allow more competitions, improved safety and provide a space for fun and healthy activity for the town's young people and skate, scooter, BMX and in-line skater community," Cr White said.

"The community provided great feedback with youth ambassadors, interest groups, retailers and individuals directly consulted and two user group workshops were held to give input into the concept designs."

Council has allocated $245,000 for the project, and $250,000 from Sports Recreation Victoria. Skate park construction specialist Grind Projects has been awarded the construction contract.

Council engaged professional skate park design consultants Baseplate/EastbyWest to develop the design work.

The original skate park was established by community members more than 20 years ago.
