Exhibition opening at Broken Hill City Art Gallery on Friday 6 February 2026
Exhibition dates: 6 February - 26 April 2026
The Broken Hill City Art Gallery is pleased to present Bakandji Man, a new exhibition by Barkandji Elder Eddy Harris, opening on Friday 6 February 2026, alongside Beautiful Tensions.
Eddy Harris is an Aboriginal Elder, artist and carver of the Barkandji tribe from Wilcannia, NSW. His practice is deeply grounded in river, Country and cultural continuity, shaped by a lifetime of lived experience and storytelling. As a child, Harris drew pictures in the burnt red sand of Wilcannia using sticks, an early expression of a creative language that continues to guide his work today.
Working across canvas, bark, emu eggs and wood carvings, Harris uses art as a powerful means of sharing Barkandji histories, knowledge and lived experience. His works reflect close relationships with Elders, a strong connection to Country, and a long-standing commitment to cultural education and community organisations. Through Bakandji Man, Harris promotes the continuation of cultural practices and the importance of passing stories on to future generations.
Kathy Graham, Gallery and Museum Manager at the Broken Hill City Art Gallery, said the exhibition offers a powerful and personal perspective on Country and culture.
"Eddy Harris's work carries deep cultural knowledge and lived experience," Graham said. "Bakandji Man is an important opportunity for audiences to engage with Barkandji stories through the voice of an Elder whose practice is grounded in Country, community and cultural continuity."
Bakandji Man will be officially opened at a free public event on Friday 6 February 2026 at the Broken Hill City Art Gallery. The opening also marks the launch of Beautiful Tensions, presented by JamFactory in celebration of Gray Street Workshop's 40th anniversary.
